Originally, these people inhabited West Virginia, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Kentucky but nowadays, majorities of the people reside in Ohio and Oklahoma. This particular ethnic group like distancing itself from war and therefore, whenever there were attacked, they moved from that place and settled in a new location. This means that they only got to establish temporary shelters as they were nomads. They made their houses, wigwams, using sheets made from the barks of trees, tree sprouts to help them with the framework and also thick grass from the bushes. The thick grass was used to cover the sides plus also the roof and its main use in addition to providing privacy was to help with the conservation of heat in the shelter.
They had no unique way of dressing as compared to the other types of Indians in the States and they, therefore, wore the same. These people earned their living through fishing, farming and hunting. Hunting was conducted by the strongest males in the clan whereas farming was done by the females who were also in charge of taking care of their homesteads when the men were away. The main crop that they planted and harvested was corn even though there were others such as squash.
Apart from when they were going for war, these people always kept their hair long and put on face paint. Among the many ethnic groups that did not like being associated with war apart from when their families have been attacked, the Piqua Shawnee ranks at the top as they loved to coexist peacefully and vacated once this was compromised. They loved their heritage and this explains why they wanted to keep their bloodline pure, not wanting to intermarry with other natives, even other Indian native groups.
The oldest people in the community held storytelling sessions with the young ones so that they could educate them about their origin and also their values as a community. It is the education that they received in addition to being made to recognize themselves as the most looked up people that have facilitated the holding on to their culture up to now.
